Tax Tips


Tuition Fees & Education Amount

  • You can claim tuition and fees paid to a qualifying post-secondary institution.

  • The federal government allows full-time post-secondary students to claim tuition fee credit up to $400 in education credits for each month they are in school.

  • Part-time students are eligible to claim $120 each month, provided their education is at least 3 weeks long, and 12 hours per month.

Interest on Student Loans

  • If you have a provincial or federal student loan, interest on these loans is deductible.

  • If there is no tax payable for that year, you can carry that interest forward and apply it on your tax return for any of the next five years.

Public Transit

  • Save your bus passes and receipts throughout the year and claim the Public Transit Tax Credit.

  • This credit applies to monthly passes, but shorter duration passes are eligible if each pass entitles you to unlimited travel for an uninterrupted period of at least five days, and you purchase enough of these passes so that it covers at least 20 days in any 28-day period.

  • Certain electronic payment cards could also qualify for the credit.

First-Time Home Buyer's Tax Credit

  • This is non-refundable tax credit first time home buyers. Maximum tax credit is $5,000.

Moving Expense

  • If you moved at least 40 km to go to school or take on a new job, you might be able to claim certain moving expenses.

  • This could include transportation and storage costs for your belongings, insurance for your valuables, vehicle and transportation expenses, the cost of canceling a lease and the cost of meals and accommodation for up to 15 days.

Disability Tax Credit

  • The disability amount is a non-refundable tax credit that a person with a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions can claim to reduce the amount of income tax.

  • If you are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, you may be able to claim the disability amount. To be eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, It must be approved by CRA Form T2201, Disability Tax Credit Certificate, for you.
